The Status of the Caddo Language Today
The Caddo language is critically endangered of going to sleep, with only a couple of advanced speakers and a couple dozen partial speakers left. It is crucially important that members of the Caddo Nation do their part to ensure the survival of our language into the next generation.
Help Revitalize and Reclaim Our Language
Get involved with the language program by registering. Contact the language director Alaina Tahlate at atahlate@mycaddonation.com to join the Caddo language program's email list, where you will be able to access video recordings and language learning resources from previous classes, get the links or announcements to attend online or in-person language classes, and get involved with the language effort by volunteering your time to help develop new language learning resources.
Help with Language Preservation
All Caddo members and descendants are invited to record Caddo language, history, stories, culture, and songs as a way of establishing our Caddo language archive. Ms. Tahlate is available to travel to record elders as well. The Caddo Nation language program offers free professional digitization services to anyone who has Caddo language songs/language documents and recordings. You can turn your old audio cassette or VHS tape into a digital file, get your original copy back, and get free unlimited physical copies of your media to share with your family. After digitization, you get to choose whether you would like to deposit a backup copy of your family's resource into the Caddo Nation language archive for other Caddo members to use.
