The Caddo Nation has reached a historic milestone with its acceptance into the federal Tribal Self-Governance Program, Chairman Bobby Gonzalez announced today.

The U.S. Department of the Interior officially notified the Nation of its approval on June 30, marking the first time in generations that the Caddo Nation has achieved the financial stability and governmental capacity required for this prestigious designation.

"This represents a return to true self-determination for our people," Chairman Gonzalez said. "For too long, decisions affecting Caddo families were made in distant offices by people who don't understand our community's needs. Now, we have the authority and resources to govern ourselves according to our own values and priorities."

Self-governance status allows the Nation to assume direct control over federal programs and funding previously administered by federal agencies. This transition provides greater flexibility in delivering services to tribal members while maintaining access to federal resources.

Self-Governance provides the opportunity for Tribal governments to exercise their sovereignty with minimal federal interference and involvement in the administration of federally funded programs.

The achievement required the Nation to demonstrate exceptional financial management, complete comprehensive planning requirements, and maintain clean audit records. Under Chairman Gonzalez's leadership since 2021, the Nation has achieved three consecutive clean audits—an unprecedented accomplishment in recent tribal history.

The transformation has included establishing a new finance department led by a certified public accountant, launching successful business enterprises, and significantly expanding member services.

"Four years ago, we made a commitment to rebuild our Nation's institutional capacity," Gonzalez explained. "Today's announcement proves that with vision, hard work, and unity, we can achieve extraordinary things for our people."

The self-governance designation takes effect in Fiscal Year 2026, positioning the Caddo Nation among an elite group of tribes nationwide with this level of administrative autonomy.
