ANADARKO, OK – The Caddo Nation has successfully acquired the historic Redskin Theater in downtown Anadarko, marking a significant milestone in cultural preservation and community investment. The theater, which has served as a cornerstone of entertainment in Anadarko since its opening on February 12, 1947, will be renamed the Warrior Theater as part of the Nation's comprehensive renovation plans.

The rebranding honors both the warrior's headdress that historically adorned the theater's iconic sign and pays tribute to the local school district's Warrior mascot, creating a meaningful connection between the venue's past and its future under Caddo stewardship.

"This acquisition represents more than just a business investment," said Caddo Nation Chairman, Bobby Gonzalez. "We are reclaiming a space with deep cultural significance and transforming it into a symbol of Caddo resilience and pride while preserving an important piece of Anadarko's architectural history."

Historical Significance

The theater, located at 221 W. Broadway, was designed by architect Jack Corgan of Dallas and constructed by Cowan Construction of Shawnee. What makes the venue truly extraordinary is its integration of Native American art and design. The theater's lobby showcases beautiful paintings by Maurice Bedoka, a distinguished member of the Caddo Nation and co-founder of The American Indian Exposition. The main auditorium features remarkable murals by renowned Cheyenne artist Archie Blackowl, whose artistic philosophy emphasized leaving lasting cultural markers for future generations.

The Caddo Nation's deep historical ties to the Anadarko area, which sits within the broader territory of Caddo people, make this acquisition particularly meaningful. The purchase allows the Nation to preserve a piece of architectural history while redefining its cultural significance for current and future generations.

Current Status and Next Steps

The Warrior Theater is currently undergoing a comprehensive architectural assessment to determine renovation needs and ensure the preservation of its historic features and Native artwork. Following the assessment, the Nation will begin renovation work to restore the theater to its full operational capacity.

"We are committed to honoring the artistic legacy of Maurice Bedoka and Archie Blackowl while ensuring this historic venue can continue serving our community," added Zackeree Kelin, Caddo Nation CNEDA Vice-Chairman. "The architectural assessment will guide our renovation efforts to preserve these cultural treasures for generations to come."

The Caddo Nation plans to share more details about exciting future programming and community initiatives for the Warrior Theater following the completion of renovations and the theater's reopening.

This acquisition continues the Caddo Nation's ongoing commitment to community revitalization and cultural preservation in the Anadarko area, ensuring that this beloved entertainment venue will continue to serve as a gathering place for families and community members for decades to come.
